Transgender Health Q & A

What is transgender health?

Transgender and Gender Non-Binary health is a specialized area of medicine focused on the unique health care needs of the Transgender and Gender Non-Binary community. While the Transgender and Gender Non-Binary community makes up only a small portion of the total population, they’re less likely to get or seek the medical care they need due to the stigma or discrimination they face. Further, many health care providers may not have the training necessary to provide targeted care.

Dr. Kai specializes in the medical needs of the LGBTQ community, with a special focus on Transgender and Gender Non-Binary identified individuals. Whether it’s a general physical exam or you have questions about hormone therapy, Dr. Kai provides you with the answers you seek and the specialized care you need.

What are common Transgender and Gender Non-Binary health issues?

Your health issues as a Transgender and Gender Non-Binary identified individual aren’t all that different from anyone else’s. However, because of discrimination, misgendering, or another uncomfortable health-related experience, you may be less likely to get the health care you need when you need it.

Some of the most common health issues that affect transgender individuals include:

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Depression
  • STDs
  • Cancer

All of these conditions are common health issues that affect all communities and are not specific to the TGNB community.

There are also health issues related to hormone therapy, such as blood clots and changes in blood pressure, that should be monitored.

Dr. Kai is a primary care practitioner who can manage all of your health needs and provide you with the compassionate care you deserve.

What can I expect with transgender hormone therapy?

Dr. Kai offers a 12-month informed consent Transgender and Gender Non-Binary hormone therapy program at Kinfolk Family Health. This program is designed to support your desire to more closely align your body with your identified gender. The program includes:

  • Initial and six-month office visits
  • One-, three-, and nine-month telehealth visits
  • Point of care tests: lipid profile and glucose, rapid HIV, and hepatitis C

Dr. Kai also reviews what to expect with hormone therapy and provides additional care when needed. Hormone therapy is considered safe when administered by a trained health care professional like Dr. Kai.
