High Blood Pressure Q & A

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a chronic health condition in which the pressure against your blood vessel walls is greater than normal. During a blood pressure reading, your blood pressure measures the force during your heartbeat, referred to as systolic pressure, and in between beats, referred to as diastolic pressure.

If left uncontrolled, the increase in pressure can damage your blood vessel walls and increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. The excess pressure may also damage other organs and place you at risk of developing kidney disease or heart failure.

High blood pressure is very common and your risk of developing the chronic condition increases as you get older. You are also at risk of developing high blood pressure if it runs in your family, you’re overweight or obese, or you’re of African heritage.

Does high blood pressure cause symptoms?

High blood pressure is sometimes referred to as the “silent killer” because it often develops without causing symptoms. You may experience symptoms such as headaches or shortness of breath if your blood pressure reaches life-threatening levels.

The only way to know if your blood pressure level is elevated is to monitor your numbers. Dr. Kai checks your blood pressure every time you come to the office for care. You can also track your numbers at home with a home blood pressure machine.

What treatments improve my high blood pressure?

Dr. Kai takes an individualized approach to the management of high blood pressure. He understands the many barriers you may face when it comes to managing your health and blood pressure, and tailors his treatment plan to meet your lifestyle and health goals.

When it comes to improving your blood pressure, Dr. Kai focuses much of his attention on helping you make changes to your diet to improve your numbers. He develops an individualized diet plan that helps improve both your health and blood pressure.

If you’re overweight or obese, Dr. Kai’s diet plan may help you lose weight. Even a small amount of weight loss can significantly improve your high blood pressure.
