What is the flu?

Influenza, or the flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that attacks your respiratory system, including your nose, throat, and lungs. The flu infection is very common.

While most healthy adults recover from the flu on their own, certain groups of people are at greater risk of complications. Those groups should get treatment from Dr. Kai to reduce their risk of more serious health issues and lessen the duration of flu symptoms. Groups at risk include:

  • Older adults
  • Pregnant women
  • People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV
  • People with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, and liver disease

Dr. Kai can test if you have the flu and provide personalized care to help you feel better quickly.

What are common flu symptoms?

Like many people, you may think your flu symptoms are due to a common cold. While the symptoms are very similar, with the flu your symptoms tend to come on quickly and severely.

Common flu symptoms include:

  • Body aches
  • Fever and chills
  • Congestion
  • Sore throat and runny nose
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Fatigue and weakness

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, contact Kinfolk Family Health to get tested for the flu and treatment for symptom relief. Getting the right care at the onset of your flu may help you get relief from your symptoms faster.

What is a flu test?

Dr. Kai offers a nasal swab when testing for the flu. During the test, Dr. Kai gently swabs a sample of cells from your nasal passage and has it tested for the flu virus. You get the results of your test within 10 minutes.

What treatments can relieve my flu symptoms?

If your flu test comes back positive, then Dr. Kai provides treatments to help relieve your symptoms. When caught within the first few days of your infection, Dr. Kai may prescribe an antiviral. This medication isn’t a cure for the flu but may help lessen the duration of your illness so you can get back to your usual self faster.

Dr. Kai may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, as well as rest and fluids to help you recover from your infection. He may also recommend you limit your activities to prevent spreading the flu to other people.
